Title:Contraction properties of shocks for conservation laws, and applications.

Shocks are discontinuous weak solutions of Conservation laws. They describe important physical phenomena as tidal bores (for the shallow water equation), or the sonic boom associated with the passage of a supersonic aircraft (for the compressible Euler equation). We will show how such discontinuities exhibit contraction properties, even for large perturbations. Preliminary results on applications to asymptotic analysis will be presented.
