Title:Subfactors and noncommutative geometry
Seminar:Noncommutative Geometry Seminar
Speaker:Dave Penneys, UCLA
I'll discuss ongoing joint work with Michael Hartglass which studies connections between subfactor theory, C*-algebras, and noncommutative geometry. The standard invariant of a finite index subfactor forms a planar algebra, and in turn, we can use planar algebras to construct various canonical C*-algebras using recent techniques of Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko (GJS). We computed the K-theory and many nice properties of what we call the GJS C*-algebras, which remember the standard invariant, and provide an access point to make connections to NCG. I'll discuss our construction, along with our current progress studying a canonical Dirac operator, which gives us compact quantum metric spaces in the sense of Rieffel.
