As the theory of topology studies small scale properties of a space, “large scale geometry” (or ‘’coarse geometry’’) studies what happens when we stand far away from the space. In this talk we introduce some very basic notions in large scale geometry, with a focus on the large scale analogue of the topological covering dimension, the so-called ‘’asymptotic dimension’’. We shall formulate the following two intuitive facts in a precise way: 1. The set of integers Z looks like a line in large scale. 2. Z and Z^2 do not look the same in large scale.
