Abstract:
"Developing and Using Symbol Sense in Mathematics" by Abraham Arcavi; Source: For the Learning of Mathematics, Vol. 25, No. 2 (Jul., 2005), pp. 42-47; This week's article will discuss the theory and importance of "Symbol Sense" (akin to "Number Sense") in the learning of mathematics. While the development of Symbol Sense is most important when students learn pre-calculus topics, it continues to be an extremely important concept as they move onto higher levels of mathematics. We will discuss both theoretical and practical implications of the topic. Additionally, if you'd like to be included on the Teaching Discussion Group mailing list, then please send an e-mail to David Zach (zach@math.psu.edu) or Aleksey Zelenberg (zelenberg@math.psu.edu).
