Title:Moduli Interpretations for Noncongruence Modular Curves
Seminar:Algebra and Number Theory Seminar
Speaker:Will Chen, Penn State University
Abstract:
Quotients of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups of SL(2,Z) are called modular curves because they are known to be moduli spaces parameterizing elliptic curves with an “abelian” level structure. In my talk I will show that quotients by noncongruence subgroups of SL(2,Z) also deserve to be called modular curves by showing that they are also moduli spaces parameterizing elliptic curves together with a “nonabelian” level structure. If time allows I will also discuss a relationship with the unbounded denominators conjecture.
